Burns Supper 2006 About 120 people helped SCDA celebrate the life and legacy of Scotland's most famous poet.
The tables promised a banquet fit for a king!
The evening began with the traditional "Piping of the Haggis" by Pipe Major Ken Liechti of Austin's Silver Thistle Pipes and Drums.
Allan Wilson delivered the "Address to the Haggis" with great vigour and expression. He was determined to make quite sure the beast was deid before we ate it!
This address, written by Robert Burns in broad Scots, the language of the lowlands, sounded wonderful, but even Allan freely admitted he hadn't a clue what he was saying!
Our MC for the evening was Drew McHolm, who reminded us at the beginning, that MC stood for "Moral Compass". He introduced the speakers and performers with great humour, kept the proceedings on track and even tried to prevent the speeches from becoming too raunchy - a tough assignment when the Scots get at the whiskey!
But even Drew was mellowing by the end of the evening!
Aileen Wilson, justly proud of her wonderful shortbread
Turns out that Drew and Rabbie Burns share the same birthday - January 25th, so let them eat cake!
Una Taylor gave us a wonderful summary of Burns' life and loves; he was prolific as both a poet and a progenitor! Una's "Immortal Memory" reminded us of Burns' great legacy to Scotland and the world.
Alistair Smith roasted, sorry toasted, the Lassies in grand style, scoring as many points as he could, without pausing for breath (though he did pause for a wee dram!)
Then our own Anne Marshall replied in kind, giving no quarter, and certainly matching Alistair, barb for barb! I declare the match up a draw!
Of course, no party would be complete without some ceilidh dancing.....
...and singing, so Lisa Smith and Linda Forsyth delighted us with songs from the homeland.
........more piping from Ken
............and yet more ceilidh dancing.
Everyone had a really enjoyable evening and appeared reluctant to leave at the end. Thank you Anne, for organizing our second SCDA Burns Supper and preparing a splendid repast. Thank you Una, for co-anchoring, and to all who made the event such a success. Thank you, Donna for providing the photos to show off our wonderful event. |
